1-year-old falls from moving vehicle in Lee's Summit

March 9, 2014

Sunday evening at about 6 p.m. emergency crews responded to the area of US 50 and Chipman Road on the report that a child had fallen out of a moving vehicle.

The initial investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle was traveling east on Chipman Road and preparing to turn onto the entrance ramp for the westbound lanes of US 50.

As the driver was making the turn onto the ramp, a 1-year-old child in the backseat of the vehicle fell out of the rear passenger door and onto the roadway.

A passing motorist immediately stopped and protected the child and administered first aid until emergency crews arrived.

The child was transported to an area hospital with injuries that are still being determined. According to a Lee’s Summit Police statement the injuries are believed to be minor.

Police are investigating to determine how the child was secured in the vehicle prior to the incident. A second child was also in the backseat of the vehicle and investigators are trying to determine how the door was opened.
