Nineteen years ago, Lee’s Summit Police Department Captain Don Fizzell helped organize a golf tournament aimed to raise funds for Lee’s Summit Police Officer Steve Hagedorn.

Hagedorn was diagnosed was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. This tournament helped him cover his medical expenses. Hagedorn passed away in 1996; however, the annual golf tournament has become a tradition. Each year, a family is chosen to receive the funds raised to help with their medical bills.

The Burks family was chosen as Sgt. Burks’ wife has been battling Classical Ehlers Danlos with Hypermobility.

This year the tournament was held on September 13th at the Shamrock Hills golf course in Lee’s Summit. Modern Woodmen of America sponsored the tournament and matched $2,500 of the money raised. A grand total of $18,227.99 was raised for the Burks family.

The Lee’s Summit Police Department and Modern Woodmen of America would like to thank all of those involved and all those who donated.
