2012 Capitol Christmas Tree to Visit Jackson County During Upcoming Holiday Season

October 25, 2012

Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders has announced that this year’s U.S. Capitol Christmas tree will stop in Independence as it makes its way to Washington D.C. for the holiday season.

Sanders made the announcement at a press conference held earlier this afternoon at the historic Truman Courthouse on the Independence Square. He was joined at the press conference by Independence Mayor Don Reimal.

“Having the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree stop in our county seat of Independence will be a great addition to this year’s holiday festivities in Jackson County,” said Sanders. “We are proud to be a part of one of our nation’s great holiday traditions.”

The tree will arrive in Independence at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 17 and will be on display during the county’s annual Truman Courthouse holiday lighting ceremony. Citizens will be able to view the tree as well as sign a holiday card that will go with the tree to Washington D.C.

This year’s Capitol Christmas Tree is being provided by the White River National Forest in Meeker, Colorado and will stop in 30 cities around the country as it makes its way to our nation’s capital. Upon arrival in Washington D.C., the tree will sit on display on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building through the holiday season.

Activities for the county’s holiday celebration will begin in the Independence Square at 3:00 P.M. on November 17. In addition to the Capitol Christmas Tree display, there will be activities for the kids, including a Winter Wonderland and sleigh rides. Entertainment for this year’s holiday lighting will be provided by the Sante Fe Elementary School Choir as well as the Ancora Choral Ensemble. County Executive Sanders and Mayor Reimal will light the Truman Courthouse at 6:00 P.M.
