850 Eagle Scouts to Renew a Kansas City Scouting Tradition

Municipal Hall is a special place for thousands of Kansas City area Eagle Scouts. From 1937 to 1979, 20,598 Boy Scouts were presented their coveted Eagle Scout Badge at the renowned Kansas City landmark. Now, more than thirty years later, a new Scouting tradition is set to begin.
On Sunday, March 10, 2013 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm, the Heart of America Council, BSA will honor all 850 youth members of the 2012 Eagle Scout Class during a special reception at Municipal Music Hall, 301 W. 13th St., Kansas City, MO.
2012 marked the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award with 850 Heart of America Council Scouts earning Scouting’s highest rank – twice the national average.
“Becoming an Eagle Scout is a life changing event for a young man. We are proud to renew this local Scouting tradition as a way to honor our Scouts for their incredible achievement,” Kendrick J.E. Miller, Heart of America Council Scout Executive.
In addition to honoring the 2012 Eagle Scout Class, the reception will also recognize the 1962 Eagle Scout Class who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary.
The event is expected to welcome more than 1,000 Eagle Scouts, Scouts, and family members and will include an Eagle Scout Class photo to be taken at 1:00 pm.
Distinguished Eagle Scout, Clifford W. Illig, Vice Chairman and Co-founder of Cerner Corporation and Co-owner of Sporting Kansas City, will serve as the 2012 Eagle Scout Class Honoree. Illig is a member of the Heart of America Council’s Executive Committee and is the father of two Eagle Scout sons.
Eagle Scout and author, Alvin Townley, will serve as the event’s guest speaker. Townley has traveled thousands of miles throughout the country and around the world to explore the legacy of Scouting. He is the author of Legacy of Honor and Spirit of Adventure.
The Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America serves 19 counties in and around the Kansas City metropolitan area and serves over 35,000 young people through more than 1,100 Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Venturing crews, and Explorer posts.
