Jackson County to Simulate Distribution Site for New Madrid Earthquake Exercise Today

May 17, 2011

The Jackson County Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security Office will be conducting a simulated point of distribution (POD) site on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 1:00 P.M.- 4:00 P.M. at Lowe’s in Independence, Missouri (19000 East Valley View Parkway). The public is encouraged to attend the POD site, which is one part of a national level exercise this week, simulating the potential effects and aftermath of a major earthquake event along the New Madrid fault.

The first 500 people that stop by the POD site will receive starter kits for earthquake preparedness.
Jackson County Emergency Preparedness and Independence, Missouri Emergency Preparedness are conducting this simulation jointly to test the county and city’s capability of running a smooth and efficient distribution site, in the event of a disaster.

In the event of a major earthquake along the New Madrid fault, it is expected that the Kansas City Metropolitan area would need the ability to host as many as 100,000 displaced residents from eastern Missouri and other affected locations.

For more information and a schedule of events, you can visit the Jackson County Emergency Preparedness website at www.jacksongov.org/emergencyprepare.
