A warning about unintended consequences
April 30, 2014
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker today warned the Missouri General Assembly to understand that their words could have deadly consequences.
Baker expressed her concern in a joint letter to Missouri Speaker of the House Tim Jones. Baker and St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce signed the letter.
Senate Joint Resolution 36 (SJR36), Baker and Joyce warned, raises serious concerns regarding their impact to prosecute violent criminals.
“No one can ensure the citizens of Missouri that the language in SJR 36 will not benefit violent criminals – at the risk of the public’s safety,” Baker said. “The proposed language has the potential to give gang members, drug dealers, domestic abusers and other criminals a right to carry guns.”
SJR 36, if approved, offers law-abiding citizens and hunters no more protection than already afforded in the second amendment, but prosecutors can be certain criminals will seek the protection of this new language, Baker added.
