Balcony Fire Displaces the Residents of Two Apartments at John Knox Village in Lee's Summit

August 4, 2012

By Assistant Chief Jim Eden,
Lee's Summit Fire Department

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, at 4:49 a.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the Villager East apartments, at 617 NE Jacob Drive in John Knox Village.

John Knox Village Public Safety responded to an automatic alarm in the building and found smoke inside of apartments 222 and 322.

John Knox Village Public Safety evacuated the residents of the apartments and started evacuation the rest of the building.

When the fire department first arrived, there was nothing visible from the outside of the three-story apartment building. Further investigation found moderate smoke in apartments 222 and 322 coming from a fire burning inside of the outside wall and balcony between the two apartments.

Fire department, police department, and John Knox Village personnel all assisted in the safe evacuation of the residents from the involved portion of the building to other parts of the complex and a bus. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire on the third floor balcony and open up the outside walls of the apartments to stop the spread of the fire.
The fire was under control by 5:14 a.m.

Fire damage was contained to a portion of the balcony of apartment 322 and the concealed spaces of the outside wall and ceiling in apartments 222 and 322. There was no fire damage to the living spaces of the apartment, but smoke damage and the opening of the walls to get to the fire made them uninhabitable. All other residents were allowed to return to their apartments.

The fire originated on the balcony of apartment 322. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
