Blue Springs man sentenced to prison in highway death
March 7, 2014
A Jackson County judge sentenced David C. Murdick to 9 years in prison today in connection with the death of Clifton Scott, a state transportation worker killed in 2012 while working at an Independence accident scene.
Judge Jack Grate announced the verdict at a sentencing hearing Friday afternoon before a courtroom packed with family, law enforcement and emergency responders.
Murdick, a laywer, pleaded guilty in January to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Scott, who was working an overnight shift in September 2012. A car driven by Murdick, who was drunk, drove through barriers and past flares and other warnings and collided with Scott. Murdickís car then hit a MoDOT truck so hard that it burst into flames.
Assistant Jackson County Prosecutor Traci Stansell asked Grate to sentence Murdick to the maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, while Murdickís attorney asked for probation.
