Bob Gough is running as a democratic candidate

August 2, 2014

Carlee Edwards

Bob Gough is running as a democratic candidate for Congress against incumbent Congressman Emanuel Cleaver. Gough has lived in Lee’s Summit for 15 years and is an active member of the community, President of Lee’s Summit TOPS, a member of Lee’s Summit Masonic Lodge and founder of the Jackson County Tax Payers Association.

Gough is a passionate advocate against the high tax rate of Missouri as the Kansas City Metro has the highest taxes in the United States. The majority of Gough’s campaign focuses on the “carnage” caused by the $2.1 trillion increase of the federal debt.

"At the urging of Obama and the Republican House Speaker, Congress voted to increase our national debt by $2.1 trillion.” Gough stated on his website.  “Our Fifth District Congressman voted for our country's huge debt limit increase.  We need a new independent representative that will reject debt limit increases.”
Gough also fought against the Lee’s Summit schools raising their tax levy by 18 percent.

While most people believe that the nation needs to control the spending, Gough believes this would only be treating a symptom.

“If we cut off the source, the spending will take care of itself,” Gough said.

He also fights against the Affordable Health Care Act.

“The Affordable Health Care Act is a debacle,” Gough said. “I would severely overhaul the whole plan.”

While the idea of the system has worked in other places, like Canada, the issues are the corrupted nature of the plan here in America. What was meant to lower the budget has ended up increasing it instead. Gough’s goal is to have a balanced budget.

While many people have varying opinions on the issues of taxes and health care, Gough defends that in the end, the only thing that matters is how you vote.

“It doesn’t matter what you look like, where you come from, your education or anything else… The only thing that matters is how the elected officials vote,” Gough explained. So when asked how he feels about specific issues he explains what he votes for and what he votes against.

“How you vote on second amendment issues, abortion, same sex marriage, and tax issues” Gough said.

“What ultimately matters, more than anything else, is how you vote.”

Gough hopes to put his votes to use in Congress this next term.

He has a BS degree in Mathematics and has been a high school mathematics teacher.  Bob and his wife Helen have been married for thirty years. Together they have three children and three grandchildren.
