The city council has approved Blue Beacon International to redevelop the former Dave Cross Motors site at the northeast corner of Chipman Road and US 50 Highway.
Blue Beacon will open a Green Lantern car wash at the location. Their plans call for an all-brick construction with three lanes, each for a different pay level. One lane will be dedicated to regular customers who pay a monthly fee and use an RFID tag, much like the K-Tag used for tolls on the Kansas Turnpike.
They will be removing the fencing surrounding the current lot, which had been used by the car dealership as a security measure. They will also be reducing the amount of impervious coverage on the site, which is currently about 90% paved, and meeting or exceeding requirements for shrubbery, trees and green space called for by city design standards.
The project will create 50 full- and part-time jobs, including 4 or 5 full-time management positions. Green Lantern has a no-tipping policy and pays a minimum of $8.50 per hour.
The company also offers medical insurance, a 401(k) program with matching benefits, an employee savings plan, and tuition reimbursement.
The application was approved unanimously by the council.
