CHAMBER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS DIG IN TO HELP LOCAL NONPROFIT
June 19, 2010
The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals (YPs) will build a community garden for the Hillcrest Transitional Housing center located near downtown Lee’s Summit on June 23.
Each quarter the Chamber YPs complete a community service project. After meeting with Hillcrest staff, committee chair Christy Wright of Commerce Bank, and co-chair, Tyler Morehead of Morehead Agency, L.L.C, knew this garden was a big undertaking worth pursuing.
“After learning about Hillcrest’s efforts to help homeless families in the area, you couldn’t help but want to get involved,” said Wright. “Hillcrest provides temporary housing and the training individuals need to gain the motivation and skills to break free of the poverty-welfare cycle. Building a garden seemed like a great opportunity for us to help bring residents together and show them with a little hard work they can enjoy the benefits of homegrown produce.”
Morehead, a former landscaper, has mapped out the design for a 6’ x 18’ garden. The group is currently soliciting donations for building supplies, plants and additional volunteers. Items still needed include soil, mulch, seeds, shovels and a picnic table for residents.
The YPs welcome any other volunteers, whether Chamber members or not, to get involved with the project. Volunteers may work from 2–5 p.m. or 5–8 p.m.
To donate materials for the garden or volunteer, contact Gina Seibel at 816-524-2424 or gseibel@lschamber.com.
