Teens sat in rapt attention as Darnell Sims showed his multi-media presentation on leadership. Perseverance, courage and character were the words of the day at the annual training for youth leaders of Lee’s Summit middle and high school alcohol and drug prevention clubs.

The former Marine Sergeant now serves as a school resource police officer at Lee’s Summit High School. Like the students he works with now, he learned about character at a young age, first from his mother and then from his drill instructor.

He advised the student leaders to "keep core values close to your heart so you can quickly make a decision if faced with adversity." To him, character isn’t just an ideal, it’s a way of life.

Loyalty, commitment, dependability, accountability. Those words still resonate in his job today working with the Lee’s Summit Police Department. Says Sims, "The character traits that are part of the [Lee’s Summit] Community of Character include many of those core values."

Character: "Know it, practice it, use it." Well said, Officer Sims. Semper Fi.
