At approximately 4:00 p.m., Tuesday June 26th the Jackson County Sheriff Department Dispatched Greenwood Police to the 100 Block of 14th Avenue North after receiving a report of shots fired during a suspected armed robbery. The report included a description of three male suspects, a blue four door automobile, and the name of one suspect.

“I know that Greenwood Police normally has two officers on duty at one time,” Col. Hugh Mills with Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said, “so I also dispatched two Sheriff’s Deputies as support. Upon running the license plate and finding a Lee’s Summit address I directed dispatch to advise Lee’s Summit PD and dispatched both LSPD and Sheriff’s Deputies to that location. I also dispatched Sheriff’s Patrol /Swat Division Captain Mike Montgomery to provide whatever assistance LSPD needed and allow them time for the tactical response team to set up for a possible situation with an armed suspect”

18 year old Shawn C. Lowery was taken into custody by LSPD  and turned over to Greenwood Police without incident.  Today, Wednesday, June 27th a warrant was issued for Lowery by Judge Jeffrey Bushur. He is charged with two counts of Robbery – 1st Degree, three counts of Armed Criminal Action and Burglary – 1st Degree.  Lowery is being held in Jackson County Jail under a $100,000 cash bond.

Following our normal procedures, the Lee’s Summit Tribune attempted to obtain incident information from the Greenwood Police Department.  At 8:42 a.m. the LS Tribune was directed to contact Mayor Marvin Megee to obtain permission to interview Greenwood Police and directed to complete a Sunshine Request through Greenwood City Clerk, Angela Smith.

The written request was forwarded to both Mayor Megee and the City Clerk at 9:57 a.m. and followed up by phone calls from Owner/Publisher Linda Ahern at noon and again after 3 p.m. when she finally reached both the City Clerk and Mayor Megee. Ms Ahern questioned Mayor Megee as to his status in the matter and was informed that he is now acting as the new public communication person.

Ahern then asked if he was the new police public information officer to which Megee said, “every city has a public communications person, I just don’t like the bad press that Greenwood has been receiving for the past couple of years.” Ahern repeated are you the new police public information officer to which he responded by saying, “have you been talking bad about me in the last 24 hours?”  Ahern reiterated that she was looking for permission to talk to Chief Leslie at which point Mayor Megee said, “I know for a fact you have been talking bad about me.”  He stated he was briefed last night by Chief Leslie last night but he had been out of the office all day. Megee indicated he would contact Chief Leslie and get an update after which he would let Ahern know if she could talk to Chief Leslie.
Mayor Megee has not contacted Ahern giving her permission to interview the Chief as of June 28, 2012 12:49 p.m.

There was a time when crime in Greenwood was so little that any Jack with a penchant for power could get po-dunk notoriety. With growth, the hush has received a hearing aid. Mayor McGee, it is time you realize that cops and robbers is not a game played by those who are afraid of getting their feelings hurt. For the citizens of Greenwood, it is time to step up, and stop electing Mayors because he's your buddy, or you know his name because your cousin went to school with his mom. This whole scenerio has discouraged any less known, with qualifications, not to try because they wouldn't be elected.

I bet it doesn't shock most LS teens that this house is a drug house,,, so i don't know why it would shock the Mayor. if you don't like your town being talked back about, THEN TAKE YOUR HEAD OUT AND CLEAN IT UP!!

We get the government we vote for. People need to get involved, get informed, and get out to vote. Mcgee's latest actions are just an example of what happens when people just don't care about their local government and allow 'the powers that be' to be in power.
