Members of the House Republican Caucus gave their support Friday, July 31, 2015 to state Rep. Mike Cierpiot as they selected him to serve as Majority Floor Leader. Cierpiot ascends from his position as Assistant Floor Leader and fills the vacancy left by state Rep. Todd Richardson, who was elected to the position of Speaker of the House in May.
As House Majority Floor Leader, Cierpiot will set the legislative calendar and determine which legislation makes it to the floor for debate and when. The Majority Floor Leader also controls the flow of business on the House floor and is considered the second most powerful position in the Missouri House of Representatives.
“I am honored to have the support of my colleagues to serve in this position, and excited to take on the challenge of moving our policy agenda through the process and across the legislative finish line,” said Cierpiot, R-Lee’s Summit. “As Floor Leader I also will give the people of 30th district a stronger voice in the statehouse. I am eager to get to work with Speaker Richardson and my colleagues to make Missouri an even better place to live, work and raise a family.”
Cierpiot will run action on the House floor for the first time officially when the General Assembly convenes for the annual Veto Session in September. The second regular session of the 98th General Assembly will begin January 6, 2016.
First elected in 2010, Cierpiot represents part of Jackson County in the Missouri House of Representatives. He began his service as Assistant Floor Leader during the first regular session of the 97th General Assembly in January of 2013. Cierpiot has lived in Eastern Jackson County for more than 35 years and currently resides in Lee’s Summit with his wife Connie J. Cierpiot.
