City of Lee’s Summit Declares State of Emergency
February 21, 2013
Assistant Chief Jim Eden Lee’s Summit Fire Department
Melissa Fears Public Communications Coordinator
LEE’S SUMMIT, MO--the City of Lee’s Summit formally activated the City’s Emergency Operations Center and Lee’s Summit Mayor Randall Rhoads declared a State of Emergency. Residents are asked to stay inside unless absolutely necessary.
The EOC was formally activated at 10 a.m. Thursday in the City’s Fire Headquarters. The purpose of the
EOC is to coordinate City activities in accordance with the Emergency Operations Plan of the City. The EOC is staffed by Lee’s Summit Mayor Randall Rhoads and representatives of the City’s Public Works, Fire, Police, Administration, Finance, Information Technology Services, Procurement, Planning & Development, Parks and Recreation, Water Utilities and Codes Administration departments until the impact of storm has been reduced.
Public Works crews are operating at a Level 4 with 30 vehicles plowing and treating arterials and collectors around the clock due to blowing and drifting snow. The City will continue to monitor the weather and add more vehicles as needed.
Citizens can assist with our efforts by removing vehicles from streets to prevent a delay in snow removal efforts. Additionally, the Fire Department asks citizens to avoid covering fire hydrants while shoveling snow. If a hydrant is covered by snow near your property, please uncover it.
Police and Fire are using four-wheeled drive vehicles for initial responses to all calls and additional staffing have been added to all response vehicles.
The Snow Desk, (816) 969-1870, will be staffed throughout the snow removal operation. Residents can receive updates about the City’s snow removal efforts by e-mail, cell phone text message and Web by visiting: www.Nixle.com. Nixle is a FREE service.
Residents are also encouraged to stay up-to-date on weather conditions, by listening to radio, watching television weather casts, and going online at cityofls.net.
