City of Lee's Summit Makes Strides with Curbside Recycling

City of Lee's Summit Makes Strides with Curbside Recycling
The Lee’s Summit City Council took a major step toward residential curbside recycling at the March 4 City Council meeting with the approval of City staff to issue a state-mandated, two-year notice to all solid waste haulers providing services in the City.
The letter, which will be mailed March 8, will inform haulers of the City’s steps toward implementing a proposed comprehensive, curbside recycling program. More than 25 solid waste haulers operate in Lee’s Summit, at least five, of which, are residential haulers. All residential haulers are currently required by Ordinance to offer Lee’s Summit residents the option of paying for curbside recycling and/or yard waste services in addition to their trash services.
The details of a citywide curbside program have yet to be determined. However, the City will be developing and fine-tuning the proposed program in the coming weeks in order to report back to the City Council in approximately 60 days. That report to the City Council will cover specifics of the proposed curbside recycling program, such as details about: • Container sizes • Number of haulers needed to serve the City • Contract duration • Effect on Home Owners Associations that already contract with a hauler • Collection of monthly fees
Curbside recycling is one of the Quality of Life and Local Government goals identified in Lee’s Summit 360˚: Charting Tomorrow, the City’s newly adopted strategic plan. Several cities in the metropolitan area already offer curbside recycling programs and like Lee’s Summit – more cities are weighing in on the pros and cons of similar services for their residents.
In 2006, the Lee’s Summit City Council adopted a goal to increase the City’s recycling rate to the national average of 35%. In order to achieve this new recycling goal, the City has been relying on input and feedback from the community and other sources.
Currently, residents of Lee’s Summit have the following options for recycling materials, such as plastic containers (types 1 & 2 only), aluminum and tin cans, paperboard, mixed office paper, magazines, and newspapers: • Self-hauling to the Drop-off Recycling Centers - South Recycling Center located at the Resource Recovery Park, 2101 SE Hamblen Rd., and the North Recycling Center, 1951 NE Douglas St., or • Voluntarily paying and participating in a curbside recycling service offered by a trash hauler. Glass containers are accepted at the City’s Drop-off Recycling Centers and in the purple Ripple Glass bins located in the parking lots of the Hen House on Rice Road, the Price Chopper located on Woods Chapel Road, the Price Chopper located on Greenwich Drive, and Gale Communities on Longview Blvd.
