City of Lee’s Summit Winter Weather Response Update

December 21, 2013

With snow, freezing rain and sleet forecast before 2 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, the City of Lee’s Summit’s crews continuously treated primary and secondary streets throughout the day on Saturday, Dec. 21.

Tonight, crews will continue to monitor road conditions as the wintery mix moves into Lee’s Summit and the entire metropolitan area.

Snow is expected to begin around 10 p.m. and could be heavy at times accompanied by wind gusts as high as 21 mph.

Residents should expect drifting snow, which may require streets to be plowed more than once.  Total accumulations for Lee’s Summit are expected to be from one to three inches.

When snow accumulations reach one inch, snow removal crews will begin plowing operations, which will continue throughout the weekend and possibly into the morning of Monday, Dec. 23.

Residents are reminded to use caution when driving and walking on pavement during freezing rain, sleet and snow conditions as well as the following:

Remove vehicles from streets.

Shovel snow to the side of your driveway to lessen the amount of snow left at your driveway entrance.

Clear snow from around fire hydrants so they can be easily located during emergencies.

Do not make snow tunnels on or near streets or driveways. Snow plows and other drivers may not see the snow tunnels and could accidently injure someone playing inside of them.

As with all winter weather events, the City’s snow removal crews will continue to monitor the weather and update their response as needed.

The City’s Snow Desk, available at (816) 969-1870, opened at 7 a.m. today (Saturday) and will continue operations until City streets are plowed and treated.

Residents are also encouraged to stay up-to-date on weather information by listening to local newscasts.
