City's Water Customers Urged to Voluntarily Conserve Water

July 4, 2012

The City of Lee’s Summit’s Water Utilities Department would like to remind customers to continue to reduce water usage. Due to high demands for water and deceasing amounts of water in storage, customers are being asked to stop the use of irrigation systems until the amount of water in storage can be replenished.

Yesterday, July 3rd, the failure of a Kansas City, Mo pump station resulted in a 7 MGD reduction in water supply to the City of Lee's Summit, Mo. Although the Kansas City pump station is now in operation, Lee's Summit is still not receiving water from this source. As a result of this decision, it has not been necessary to ask the City's customers to participate in a boil advisory. The City is awaiting water test results before making additional decisions.

This request for voluntary water conservation is necessary in order to ensure an adequate amount of water supply remains available for domestic needs and fire protection.
Residents are asked to conserve water in the following ways:

DO
•    Minimize water use whenever possible.
•    Stop the use of sprinklers and irrigation systems
•    If necessary, water plants, trees and landscaping using a hand-held watering can or with a hose that has a hand-operated trigger mechanism.
DO NOT
•    Leave hoses or faucets running
•    Use soaker hoses
Customers will be notified through local media outlets and the City of Lee's Summit’s communication methods, including the City’s website at www.cityofls.net, Nixle and LSTV, when normal water operations can resume or if mandatory restrictions become necessary.
For more information, call the City’s Water Utilities Department Director Mark Schaufler at (816) 969-1900.
