2012 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
Jan. 16, 2012
Celebrate through musical and dance performances the City’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. event on Monday, January 16 in the Pavilion at John Knox Village, 520 NW Murray Road, Lee’s Summit.
“Stone of Hope,” the theme of this year’s celebration, was chosen because of the monument recently dedicated on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. King.
The City’s 2012 celebration will begin earlier than in previous years to accommodate all of the great performances. The Preshow begins at 5:30 p.m. with cultural exhibits from the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and individuals from our community as well as a performance by the Lee’s Summit West High School Drumline.
The celebration kicks-off at 6 p.m. and will include the following performances: Heritage Dance Ministry, El Grupo Atotonilco, Nartan Academy of Dance, and Pleasant Lea Middle School Black and Gold Choir. The national anthem will be performed by Paige Sapp of Lee’s Summit High School and the presentation of colors will be by the Lee’s Summit West High School Air Force Junior ROTC Color Guard. Local singer Regina Sims will sing two songs during the celebration.
This year’s keynote speaker is Pastor Armour D. Stephenson III, a 2002 graduate of Lee’s Summit High School, and the pastor of City of Truth Church in Kansas City, Mo. The celebration will also include a videotaped Reflection about Dr. King by Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II.
