Bryn Mattes had an unusual request for her 11th birthday party. Instead of presents, she asked her friends to bring fabric and help her make blankets to donate to a hospital.
“The blankets themselves weren’t very hard to make. It’s just focusing and trying not to goof off with your friends,” Bryn said.
Bryn’s friends were not surprised by this request. Two years before she asked her friends to bring donations for an animal shelter in lieu of presents.
“She wanted to have a craft for her and her friends to do,” Jennifer Mattes, Bryn’s mother, said.
Bryn and her mother bought fabric during the Black Friday sales in preparation for Bryn’s sleepover.
“She’s just that kind of kid,” Jennifer said.
When Bryn was in third grade she collected pop tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. She has grown her hair out and plans to donate to Locks of Love.
“I want to thank my mom and my friends,” Bryn said. “It’s a really good activity. It’s really easy and pretty fun.”
Bryn is currently in fifth grade at Lewis and Clark Elementary. She is a member of the North Star Swim Team and is starting volleyball next week.
“I want to be in the Olympics for swimming and if I retire or don’t make it I want to be a swim coach or a lawyer,” Bryn said.
Bryn wants to attend Stanford University.
