Whether on the stage or the field, one Lee’s Summit resident has been achieving success since childhood and is, once again, set to make the community proud.
Megan Franco, 27, seems to shine at whatever she approaches. From her early years, dancing and singing on stage at Starlight, to being a scholar athlete and enjoying a successful soccer career at Hannibal LaGrange University, to providing fitness training to young people at Y.E.S. Kids Fitness is Lee’s Summit, Megan is now enjoying success in a new arena: The Professional Women’s Football Alliance. The Kansas City Tribe is set to play in the third round of the playoffs on Saturday in Dallas after enjoying a first round bye and a win last weekend against the St. Louis Slam.
Megan’s career started with 16 years of dance and theater at Monica’s School of Dance. During that time she was in 9 musical productions at Starlight Theater. She also performed and trained in New York and at Walt Disney World. She has appeared in television commercials for KCWB-29 in Kansas City.
During her high school years she achieved many All-State and All-Conference awards in volleyball, basketball, soccer and track. She attended Blue Ridge Christian High School where she still holds many of the current school records. Her awards in High School also include the Joe Nichols Award for top athlete, the Thespian Award for Drama and the Director’s Award for Music as the top in her field in each area.
Megan graduated from Hannibal LaGrange University Magna Cum Laude in 2008, with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management and a minor in Business. She was a scholar athlete in soccer, track and basketball. Her achievements while in college included All Conference Mid-Fielder in soccer, All Conference 300 meter Hurdler in Track & Field, and she also was among the recipients of the NAIA All-American Scholar Athletes and the 2008 Ivan Oliver Female Athlete of the Year for her University.
Following college, Megan traveled with her husband Estevao throughout Canada as he played professional soccer. Now he is her most avid fan as she takes her turn playing Professional Woman’s Football. Once again, Megan has achieved incredible success for one of the eight teams still contending for the Woman’s Football Alliance Championship game.
Megan is a dominating force as a rookie player and has made her mark on the team and in this league. Megan is currently leading her team or tied for the team lead in the following categories; Forced Fumbles, Fumbles Recovered, and Tackles for a loss; second on the team in Sacks and third in total tackles. She is on a team with some experienced veterans including Jenny Schmidt who is the top Quarterback in the WFA with a pass rating of 138.8.Schmidt’s leadership, along with an outstanding defense, has led the Tribe to an 8-1 record and a chance to win the most coveted prize, the WFA Championship, set to be played August 4th at Heinz Field in Pittsburg, and televised by ESPN. Following a win in Dallas, the Tribe will play the San Diego Surge on July 21st at Center High School in Kansas City.
