GOT Art Gallery Presents Diagnosis: Faces behind Cases

March 25, 2017

GOT Art Gallery hosts monthly Fourth Friday art opening to kick of new exhibits each month and offer and opportunity to meet the artists.  March Fourth Friday is the return of Fourth Fridays in Downtown Lee’s Summit.  These monthly art walks take place in Downtown Lee's Summit from March through August and will feature local art, music and theatre entertainment every fourth Friday of each month. Visitors can stroll the streets of the historic downtown district where over a dozen local businesses will be participating.

Featuring the work of the galleries instructor and local artist, Ivey Zoellers, Got Art Gallery on Third presents Diagnosis: Faces Behind Cases.  The inspiration for Diagnosis comes from the artist’s younger brother. She was influenced by his bravery and the fearlessness he demonstrated through the chemo which was a source of strength for her through the course of creating this series. The most significant thing that impacted her was the realization that cancer does not discriminate. It does not see if you are young or old, if you are strong or weak, if you are charming or foul, or if you are educated or ignorant. The purpose of her work is to pay homage to the individuals affected by cancer and how they, and all who love, support, and encourage them have become united in a common battle.

This series is titled “Diagnoses: Faces Behind Cases” because it exemplifies the message. As mentioned the inspiration and meaning of the series is cancer awareness. The artist attempts to make people more aware of cancer by simply showing it for what it is. Malignant cells. The luminescent colors of the florescent micro-graphs of cancer cells are what initially captured her interest. After further consideration I realized that cancer was much more than a disease. Using invisible UV reactive paint and black lights the figures of people the artist has personally known who have fought or survived emerge over the cancer cells and drain the distinction of the disease. All people fade away eventually. However, those who face to overcome their challenges become heroes who should always be remembered.

About the artist

Ivey Zoellers is a graduate of UCM in Warrensburg, MO. with a double major in Art Education and Painting.  Zoellers has been a member of the staff at GOT Art Gallery teaching after school classes, summer camps and private parties.  She is also a substitute art teacher in the Lee’s Summit R7 School District.  Zoellers has a passion for using her art to bring awareness to meaningful issues in our daily lives.

The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Friday, Mach 24th, from 5pm-8pm. The exhibit is on view from March 24th- April 3rd, 2017.
