Kansas City - An ALL STAR City In 2012

June 23, 2012

By Fred Liggett

Major League baseball fans every year hear about the All Star break where the best players gather in the same city to play a game pitting the National League against the American League. This year Kansas City gets the honor to host these All Stars with the game set for Tuesday, July 10. Along with the All Star game is plenty of other activities to keep everyone busy over a 5-day period starting July 6. In fact area baseball fans may be the ones needing a break after the 5 days of activities wrap up the night of the 10th.

Over the next four weeks we will take an in depth look at all the fun activities being offered by MLB, the host City of Kansas City and other area attractions. This week we begin with events surrounding the ALL Star Fan fest taking place at the KC Convention Center inside Bartle Hall. FanFest takes place from July 6 through 10 with a special promotion offered each day. On Friday, July 6th is Military appreciation day honoring US armed forces. Saturday, July 7th is kids day offering plenty of family friendly activities all day long. Sunday, July 8th is Kansas City tribute day honoring players who made their mark playing in Kansas City. Monday, July 9th is Legacy day which includes an appearance from members of the all american girls pro league. Tuesday, July 10th the event  hosts all star legends day where members of the 1960 and 1973 all star teams will meet fans. 1960 and 1973 were the two previous years that Kansas City has hosted this annual major league event. If you or someone you know has memories of attending or watching these two all star games your welcome to send us your comments and thoughts to editor@lstribune.net. After our four part series we will  print the best memories provided from those two earlier all star games. The All Star FanFest is part of a interactive baseball theme park over 400,000 square feet of baseball attractions for all ages. Admission is $30 per day with daily hours from 9a-8p except for tuesday when they close the fest at 6pm. For more information on all the attractions over the 5 days log onto www.allstargame.com.

On a personal level this writer has signed up to participate in one of the many events surrounding the all star game and that’s the all star game 5K Fun Run. At first I wondered what was I thinking but now I’m glad I did for several reasons. To sign up and participate yourself log onto www.allstargame.com/5K. The Run begins on s\Sunday morning July 8 in downtown Kansas City. The run costs $25 and raises money for Stand Up 4 Cancer. Each week over the next 4 weeks I will provide you information on how I am preparing for the Run. This will be my first ever 5K run and one I am looking forward to as everyone who finishes the run will receive a commemorative 5K All Star Medal. Each Runner after signing up gets their very own All Star page so they can encourage others to donate to the event. I look forward to sharing my journey to the “Finish” line with you.
