Kantorei Professional Choir Performs Tonight Solomon’s Song LS First Presbyterian Church
By Mary Pechar
Lee’s Summit is blessed to serve as home base for the Kantorei Choirs of Greater Kansas City. This professional choral group is putting on the first professional choral concert in Lee’s Summit in over ten years. The first performance is tonight, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Lee’s Summit First Presbyterian Church 1625 NW O’Brian. This concert entitled Solomon’s Song features Pinkham’s Wedding Cantata and Palestrina’s Canticum Canticorum. A second performance will be held tomorrow, March 13th at 3:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church 2552 Gillham Rd Kansas City, MO. Tickets are $10 at the door and students are free.
While not a stranger to this type of music, the groundswell of pure music from these beautiful voices is a rare treat. At a level even more rarely experienced without instrumental accompaniment. Please take this opportunity to introduce or reacquaint yourself with this caliber of a choral concert.
Kantorei Kansas City is the passion and dream of Artistic Director Chris Munce and his co-founder wife Beth. The choir was originally assembled at the request of Chris’s brother for a choir to sing the mass at his wedding two years ago at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The group meshed both musically and personally. Chris and Beth began to think about how to expand this collaboration.
Now Kantorei Kansas City has a roster of 18 musicians, performing with 12 – 16 based on schedules and availability, and has filed to become a 501c3 Non Profit. A major objective is to educate the public on this type of music and to perform music that is rarely performed. According to Chris nine times out of ten the audience has not heard a particular selection before. Half of the music performed is Renaissance or before and half is more modern but still rare to most listeners. Chris commented, “Themes that we can discuss through music are really timeless.” The venues are chosen to showcase the music in the environment that it was written for.
Beth Munce appreciates having an outlet for this style of singing. “The camaraderie and friendship is great, we looked for people who got along well together and whose voices fit well together.” she added. “It is fun to sing together, you can’t make as beautiful music if you don’t get along well. It’s very fun, but also very professional.”
Two thirds of the group have Bachelor or Master Degrees in Music while the rest of the choir are just finishing their degrees and beginning their careers. One of those is Jon Duncan who is in his final semester at the UMKC Conservatory, “This is like a dream come true, being part of a chamber ensemble is always attractive because of the intimacy.”
