KC Freeze softball team and head coach Gary Meier, from Lee’s Summit, ended their nine year legacy with a National Championship in the Girl’s 18 and Under Fast Pitch Northern National Tournament.
In their last game together, on August 5, Meier led the Freeze to a dramatic victory over Chicago’s BNGSA Avanti’s Angels in Rochester, Minnesota.
Meier has coached KC Freeze for nine years. His final game was bittersweet.
“Of all of the games that I have managed with the Freeze, this was my most difficult. Winning a National Championship is a tremendous accomplishment and the girls will never forget it,” Meier said.
The Freeze ended their season with a record of 72-24-3.
“I never thought I would have coached softball, but I am sure glad I did. It has made me a better person, and I know all of the girls I’ve coached will be better for having played the game,” Meier added.
Nine of the eleven girls on the team will continue to play softball at the collegiate level. Meier plans on coaching his son’s competitive baseball team next year.
