Lee's Summit ‘Cop on Top’ for Special Olympics
Jan. 16, 2012
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is a yearlong law enforcement initiative designed to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics and its athletes. Saturday, Jan 14th was the first of four fund raising events to be held in January in which the Lee’s Summit Police Department actively lends their support. All money that is raised in the Kansas City area goes directly to support Special Olympics athletes from the metro area.
The event is the second annual Freezin’ for a Reason Ride. This extreme ride was open to all motorcycles, Jeeps, convertibles, Hot Rods and anything that you can drive your big heart to help our local Special Olympians. The Ride began at 11:00 a.m. with lunch and registration at Gail’s Harley Davidson (71Hwy/150Hwy). The ride started at 1:30 p.m. with a police escort as the group proceeded to the Longview Lake Beach for a group photo. The ride continued to the Downtown Lee’s Summit area and concludes with more fun and an auction at Stuey McBrew’s.
Thursday, January 19 The “Cops on Top” event will be held on Thursday, January 19th beginning at 11:00 a.m. when Officers Brian Wilson and Jeremy Brownlee climb to the roof of Habanero’s Restaurant. The two will remain on the roof until they meet their fundraising goal. The long range weather forecast indicates that they won’t be experiencing a repeat of last year’s blizzard as they hang out on top. It will be interesting to see just what you may be able to convince them to do up ‘on top’ for a generous donation. Habanero's will be donating 10% of all our sales for the day of the event. Please come out enjoy dinner and a drink and donate to a great cause.
Saturday, January 21, Jeremy Brownlee, an owner of CrossFit LS, will put on the 2nd Annual Athlete 4 Athletes competition. The event will start at 8:00 a.m. and run until approximately 2:00 p.m. The event is being hosted at Dave Moore's church (New Summit Presbyterian Church; 1800 Independence Ave, LSMO). Athletes 4 Athletes is a 3 event individual CrossFit competition. Everyone is encouraged to stop in and watch the competition.
Saturday, January 28 The final event in January is the annual Polar Bear Plunge. This year’s plunge will be held at Longview Lake on Saturday, January 28th, 2011 at noon. Sgt. Brian Wilson will lead a team of brave volunteers who will plunge into the icy waters for this cause.
Sgt. Wilson has also developed a reputation as a “super plunger” which means he will enter the water once each hour for a 24 hour period beginning at noon on Friday, January 28th. His reputation also includes being the top fundraiser in the metro area. His goal for this year is an ambitious $24,000 and he will need your support to make it happen. For more information on the event or to make a donation, you can visit the Special Olympics website at www.somo.org/plungekc.
