What do Butler, Mo., Phoenix Ariz., and downtown Lee’s Summit have in common? Solar powered energy designed and installed by Solar Link, a Lee’s Summit firm founded by Corey McDonald.
Solar Link provides end-to-end solar services from consulting, design, and process and procedure development to ensure reliable installation along with ongoing support and maintenance. Their applications can be found across the country, from California to Connecticut. They are also consulting in Canada.
Pave Guard Technologies, McDonald’s first solar energy company, is now sold as a Solar Link product. Pave Guard was the result of McDonald’s quest to reduce the impact of Missouri ice and snowstorms on our roads and the people trying to navigate their treacherous surfaces. This solar energy solution eliminates snow and ice from forming on bridges, highways, roadways and parking lots.
While using solar generated energy to heat these paved surfaces during inclement weather, Pave Guard can then be used to offset utility costs the remainder of the year. Solar Link is now developing a second generation Pave Guard application.
According to McDonald, “We have an average of 5.4 sun hours per day. Missouri is ranked No. 4 in the United States in generating solar energy.”
While they also have residential applications, the company’s primary focus is commercial, industrial and utility grade systems. In Butler, Solar Link will bring 12 megawatts of power online by the end of the 3rd quarter of this year. Butler who prides itself on being the first city west of the Mississippi River to have electric power will add 14 to 20 acres of 12 by 15 foot panels to its energy cooperative. The cooperative also includes energy generated by a wind farm and a landfill gas project. This will be the first in Missouri with the size and magnitude to be deemed a solar farm. Solar Link currently maintains an solar farm they designed and installed in Arizona.
There are numerous systems in Lee’s Summit and the Kansas City metro area, with one of their most recent systems being the new downtown Lee’s Summit offices of Parker Swearngin, LLP, 215 SE Douglas. In just two weeks, this application has already generated enough excess energy to power 1.2 computers for a year.
One thing you notice with a quick glance up is that their roof is white. This allows for energy to be generated not only directly by the sun but also from the ambient light being reflected off the roof.
