As a young man, Shawn Midkiff spent much of his time at a barber shop in his hometown, Holden, Missouri.
“I guess I spent a little bit too much time around there because one day one of the barbers asked me if I wanted to learn how to cut hair,” Midkiff said.
Soon after that, Midkiff went to school to become a barber. He started his career at Whiteman Air Force Base.
Midkiff was previously a barber in Lee’s Summit for seven years. He left to move to Atlanta, Georgia because his wife’s job relocated. Now he’s back in Lee’s Summit.
When he returned to Lee’s Summit, Midkiff found that there was an opening at John’s Barber Shop, located at 217 SE Douglas Street in downtown Lee’s Summit.
“We’re happy to have Midkiff back in Lee’s Summit working for us,” Nick Swearngin, John’s Barber Shop owner, said. Midkiff started at John’s Barber Shop on September 1.
The shop was founded in 1941, and Nick Swearngin’s father, John Swearngin, took over ownership in 1972 after working there for three years. Nick Swearngin took over ownership of the shop in 2008 after his father retired. Midkiff is the fourth of four fulltime barbers at John’s Barber Shop.
“It’s great to be back in Lee’s Summit,” Midkiff said. “I have lots of clientele here, and I’d like to welcome them all to John’s Barber Shop.” Open Tuesday thru Friday: 7:00 a.m. 'till 6:00 p.m., Saturday: 6:00a.m. 'till 1:00 p.m. Closed on Sunday & Monday
