Summit Christian Academy Brings Literature To Life Through Critical Thinking Curriculum
November 24, 2012
Summit Christian Academy (SCA) is witnessing student achievement gains in vocabulary, reading comprehension, total reading, critical thinking, problem solving, and written expression, as a result of the implementation of Foundations and Frameworks (F&F). F&F was added to SCA’s curriculum in 2005 to equip students to fully understand ideas conveyed in text and in 2012, SCA lowered the grade level taking the class to include first grade.
“Students learn to focus on reading comprehension through the intentional instruction of critical thinking skills as early as first grade,” commented F&F Coordinator, Alethea Beasley. “One thing that sets F&F apart is the fact that it uses authentic literature rather than readings from a single publishing company. SCA students are reading the classics, reading books rich in cultural diversity, and reading books chosen for their interest level for students.”
Throughout the year, students will read approximately eight novels, ranging from beloved classics such as The Secret Garden to nonfiction books like Crisis in Space: Apollo 13, to historical fiction like Number the Stars. Teachers help students take the literature and analyze it through the use of vocabulary exercises, graphic organizers, silent sustained reading, small group discussion, and memorized pattern statements. Multiple elements of literary analysis are mastered, some of which include setting, plot, character, symbol, figurative language, summarization, and main idea.
F&F is included in the SCA curriculum for 1-6th grade students. SCA teachers have embraced the research that supports the curriculum and they are seeing results in the classroom.
“One of our goals at SCA is that all students will graduate being readers. We want them comfortable reading any text and confident in their ability to evaluate the information contained therein,” commented Academic Dean Kimberlee Gill.
