Two Summit Christian Academy debaters, senior Stephen Herrera and sophomore Logan Kenepaske, received first place in the Public Forum District Qualifying Debate Tournament last week.  Competition included 51teams from across the Kansas City Metro area.  The top four qualifying teams, including Herrera and Kenepaske, will compete at the National Tournament to be held in Birmingham, Alabama in June.

Herrera and Kenepaske were selected by SCA Speech & Debate Teacher Anne Mussatti to compete in the Public Forum part of the district tournament.  Mussatti commented, “I am so proud of these young men – they represented our school exceptionally well.  Being the only school to go undefeated throughout the entire tournament is a huge accomplishment and I look forward to seeing them compete at the national level.”  Last year Herrera was named the top qualifier in Student Congress and attended the National Tournament representing SCA.

The National Debate Tournament is the largest academic event and involves thousands of students from across the nation - all competing for recognition on the national debate stage.

“I am so proud of these two debaters,” said secondary principal Mr. Emir Ruiz Esparza. “I was extremely excited last year when Herrera made school history as our first national qualifier.  I am doubly excited to see him and teammate Logan Kenepaske compete so successfully this year.  They are both fearsome competitors and are more than capable of representing our school this summer.”
