The Global Connect program recently hosted the first annual Ping-Pong & Badminton Tournament with over 100 students and faculty in attendance. International intern and recent Lee’s Summit Human Relations inductee, Luke Hammer, initiated the idea.
“The idea of a ping-pong and badminton tournament came to me upon discovering the love from some of our international students for ping-pong and badminton,” said Hammer. “I thought it would be fantastic to give SCA students a taste of these two sports and let them experience playing in a tournament with our international friends.”
The tournament was held in the high school on a recent day off to introduce the student body to sports that are very popular in other countries around the world.
“Ping-pong and badminton are extremely popular sports in Asia and a national pastime in China for over a billion people,” shared SCA’s International Program Director Kathy Tharp. “In an effort to encourage the enjoyment of these sports and friendly competition among our students from China, South Korea and Germany, we hosted the 1st Annual Ping-Pong and Badminton Tournament. We were thrilled with the enthusiastic response of students, teachers, and parents.”
Junior Sonic Yan from China took 1st place in singles badminton. Bible teacher, Wayne Stam took 1st place in singles ping-pong. Stam and senior Zach Crabtree took 1st place in doubles badminton. Second place winners were junior KK Zhu from China, junior Tim Cook, P.E. Teacher Brenton Bell and 7th grader Levi Trimmer.
