Democrat Chris Moreno files to run for District 37
April 6, 2012
Chris Moreno
Moreno has a proven record as a leader fighting for hard working families against special interests
Small business marketing executive and consultant Chris Moreno has officially filed to run as a Democrat for State Representative in the newly created District 37, which includes portions of Grandview, Lee’s Summit, Raymore and South Kansas City.
“As a father, and small business owner, I feel it is important that we have an experienced leader standing up for hard working people in their fight against special interests,” said Chris Moreno. “Working for Missouri Governor Nixon, I was not only successful in passing over $100 million for Missouri’s unemployed workers and uncovering over $40 million annually in fraud, but I worked with leaders on both sides of the aisle to extend job training, proudly fought for the families of those killed in the line of duty, blocked attacks on workers and protected small business owners and taxpayers from unfunded federal mandates.”
Raised in South Kansas City and Lee’s Summit, Chris Moreno graduated from Lee’s Summit High School and became the first in his family to graduate from college at Central Missouri State University with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and Communications. While in college Moreno was a card carrying member of the Communications Workers of America (CWA). In 2004, he served as a Regional Field Organizer for the Democratic National Committee Kerry/Edwards Presidential Campaign. Following that election, Moreno was the General Manager and District Trainer for a Cingular Wireless Retailer and was elected to his first of three terms on the Jackson County Democratic Committee.
In 2007, he was appointed Western Missouri Political Director and Statewide Labor Outreach Director for Attorney General Jay Nixon’s campaign for Governor and for The Missouri Democratic Party. After Governor Nixon’s landslide victory in 2008, Chris Moreno was one of six appointed to Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s Transition Team, where he created the first ever statewide, bi-partisan team of community, labor and business leaders dedicated to finding the best and brightest applicants for key positions in state government.
Following the transition in 2009, Chris Moreno worked for Governor Nixon as his Liaison to the Missouri Dept. of Labor & Industrial Relations, where he was responsible for numerous pieces of legislation including Missouri’s historic unemployment extension bill and the “Line of Duty Compensation Fund” for Fire Fighters, Police Officers and Emergency Personnel killed in the Line of duty.
Moreno was credited for his hard work in negotiating a historic, bi-partisan, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with business and labor leaders to remove bureaucratic red tape after uncovering over $40 million in worker misclassification fraud by business owners cheating tax codes to avoid paying into the state unemployment and workers compensation funds.
“I’m proud to be from a blue collar union family. At a time when special interest politicians in Jefferson City are cutting funding for the blind, trying to rollback child labor laws, debating whether we have evolved as a species and attacking women and minorities, here in the real world people are praying for work and small businesses are barely getting by. Our community deserves a commonsense, experienced leader in Jefferson City ready on day one to fight the nonsense, demand a jobs bill, help boost economic development and hold special interests accountable. I am the only candidate with a proven track record of leadership on these issues and that is why I am asking for your vote,” said Moreno.
Chris Moreno and his wife Cortney have been together for 13 years. Together they have two children, Dominic and Mia. Chris Moreno is a member of the Lee’s Summit Citizens for Excellence, and has also been elected three terms on the Jackson County Democratic Committee, appointed by community leaders to the Lee’s Summit 360 Economic Development Committee and Lee’s Summit Re-Districting Committee.
