A memorial for all veterans

A memorial for all veterans

November 12, 2011

Lee’s Summit is proud of its Veterans and always goes the extra mile to ensure the recognition and appreciation is celebrated. While the Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery has a memorial to veterans of World War II, we now have resident veterans of several additional conflicts.

In an effort spear-headed by Joe Spallo, funds are being raised for an All American Veteran Memorial to be placed at Howard Station Park. This is not intended to replace the existing, well-loved memorial, but to augment it and give the recognition to those who fought in later conflicts.

The memorial will be installed and maintained by Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation and will cost $3,500. To date, $1,200 has been raised from personal contributions and a generous donation from the VFW. Several other organizations are considering the initiative.

To add your support, contact Spallo at 816-935-0791 or jspallo@sbcglobal.net.

It has always been my understanding that the current memorial was/is called The All Veterans Memorial. My father, Robert (Bob) Mulford, worked hard on the current memorial and was very proud of it, as am I. While I don't know the exact number of family members names on the bricks on the current memorial, I do know that it includes at least 3 generations. My grandfather served during WWI, my father WWII, and myself during the Vietnam era and Cold War. My husband also served, retiring from the Air Force. I would love to add the name of my son who is currently serving in the Air Force. Howard Station Park is hallowed ground to me, I believe this addition will further enhance the memorial area. Thank you to Joe Spallo and everyone who supports this effort.
