A quick online query of stables in Lee’s Summit returns thirty different listings. Where you find horses, you find people wearing some sort of western apparel. When you think of western apparel in Lee’s Summit or the Kansas City Metro area, there is no question; you are talking about the Rusty Spur Couture.
When you walk in the door, the delicious aroma of fine leather slowly begins to surround you. You notice the bright clothes and sparkling jewelry and the rows and rows of gorgeous soft boots. As you continue to walk around the store you discover the western art work, the custom candles, the home furnishing items and wander into the area devoted to men.
Owner, Terry Langley has always been involved with horses and dressed in western apparel. On a Colorado trip with a friend, Terry sat back and observed women shopping for western apparel. Additional research convinced him that this was a market with great potential. “Western clothing is making a comeback”, says Terry. “With the economy the way it is, people are going back to their roots.”
Terry’s vision is clearly stated on the Rusty Spur web site. “When it comes to being western, as well as cool, contemporary, and edgy, there is one place you have to shop! The Rusty Spur is not your average western store! Whether you are going to dance the night away or ride your horse, come in and our expert fitting staff will fit you in the brands that make you look fabulous.”
The Rusty Spur is located in the historic bank building on the corner of 3rd and SW Main. Terry delights that Cole Younger lived in the hotel right above his business. “Downtown Lee’s Summit feel like home” says Terry, “I wanted to be more than a destination location. Here, when the women are shopping the men can go to the bars. I am really looking forward to the holiday season.”
While the brick and mortar store opened November 7, 2008, this May Terry took his business to a new level with the completion of his web site www.rustyspur.com. He quickly recognized the need to advertise on web sites and in magazines centered in the equestrian world. By using these avenues to bring people to the Rusty Spur web site, it now generates 30% of the businesses sales. It has also brought new international shipping challenges with orders from Canada, England and Denmark among others.
The Rusty Spur is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6 pm. They feature Ladies Wine Night every 1st and 3rd Thursday from 5pm until 8pm with drawings for free merchandise. They are closed on Sunday. The address is 228 SW Main Street. To reach the store by phone, call 816 272-5515 or 800 575-3514. You can find them on the web and become a fan on Facebook.
