Distant eagles on the wing or the nation’s symbol viewed up close, there’s a good chance for both at the Smithville Lake Eagle Days.
The Missouri Department of Conservation and cooperating partners will hold Eagle Days from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8; and from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 9, at the Paradise Pointe Golf Course Clubhouse, 18212 Golf Course Road.
Diane Johnson of Operation Wildlife will present live eagle programs each day. She will display captive eagles that were rehabilitated after injuries.
Crafts for children will be available. Booths highlighting nature and eagles will be offered by the Conservation Department, the Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary, Friends of Lakeside Nature Center, Clay County Parks and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
There will also be eagle viewing stations set up around the lake. Buses will take visitors to those stations are regular intervals. If weather conditions cooperate, there are often eagles circling in flight over the lake or perched on trees. The eagles follow migrating waterfowl flocks southward and ducks and geese often congregate at the lake.
Attendees are urged to dress warm and bring their binoculars and cameras. Spotting scopes may be available at some viewing sites.
