On Sunday, April 17, 2011, at 5:46 p.m. the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the Smart Start Daycare, 809 SE Douglas Street. The business owner had left and returned to discover the building full of smoke.
When the fire department arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the one–story daycare facility. Everyone was out of the building. The business was not open at the time of the fire.
Firefighters entered the structure to confirm the building was empty and attack the fire. The fire was under control by 5:58 p.m.
The fire was contained to the corner of the open classroom with heavy heat and smoke to the remainder of the building.
