September 16, 2012
By Jim Eden, Assist. Chief LSFD
On Sunday, September 16, 2012, at 2:53 a.m., the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 901 NE Ridgeview Drive. The caller reported the fire was in apartment ‘F’ and everyone was outside. When the fire department arrived, smoke and fire was visible from a top floor apartment of the three-story, seven unit, apartment building. It was reported that all of the occupants of the building had been evacuated. Apartment F was heavily involved. Firefighters knocked down the fire coming from the front of the unit and entered the apartment to extinguish the fire inside. The fire was under control by 3:16 a.m..
The majority of the fire was contained to apartment F, with minor fire spread into the attic above. The other apartments on the top floor had minor smoke damage with minor water damage to the apartments below unit F. All but three units of the building were able to be reoccupied. The fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen area of apartment F, and caused heavy damage to the inside of the apartment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the residents.
