Fire Heavily Damages A Lee's Summit Townhome

On Saturday, April 23, 2011, at 12:38 PM, the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1800 Block of NE Knollbrook. One caller reported the garage door of one the units exploded and the building was on fire. Other callers reported an explosion and fire. No one could determine if the building was occupied.

When the fire department arrived, two units of the two –story, four- unit, townhome were on fire. The occupants of the neighboring units were being notified to leave.

Firefighters entered the townhome to search for any occupants and determine the number of units involved. Fire operations then switched to a defensive attack for the initial knock down of the fire in the involved units. After initial knock down, crews re-entered the building for overhaul and final extinguishment. The fire was under control by 1:38p.m. No one was home in either of the involved units at the time of the fire.

The fire caused extensive damage to two units of the townhome with varying amounts of smoke damage to the other units. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
