Firefighters to participate in 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
Sept. 10. 2011
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2011, current and retired firefighters will gather in 46 cities across the United States and Canada to climb 110 stories as a tribute to their fallen brothers. The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb is not a race, but an opportunity to honor and remember the 343 FDNY members who sacrificed their lives saving others.
This year for the first time, 343 firefighters from around the Midwest will climb to the top of the Town Pavilion high rise in downtown Kansas City. Each participant will wear turnout gear and climb in honor of a specific member of the 343 who gave their lives. To emulate the 110 stories, participants will climb to the top of the Town Pavilion 3 times and finish with an additional 7 flights.
The first stair climb was held Sept. 11, 2005, in Denver, Colo.,where five firefighters climbed 110 flights of stairs in a downtown high rise in memory of their FDNY brothers and in support of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The second year, 12 firefighters participated in the climb, and each year the number continued to grow until it was capped at 343 in 2008.
Three local firefighters will be participating in the Kansas City climb. Brad Lancaster is a LSPD dispatcher and member of the Pleasant Hill FPD. Brad will be climbing to honor Stephen Belson. LSFD is represented by Kia Tuala, who is climbing in honor of Michael Haub. Matthew Hawley, Pleasant Hill FPD, will be climbing in honor of Daniel Brethel.
Michael H. Haub F.D.N.Y. 2001 Michael H. Haub, 34, firefighter, FDNY, Ladder 4. A dedicated father and firefighter, Haub’s life revolved around his family and the firehouse. Haub joined the FDNY in 1999, but he wasn’t a newcomer to firefighting. A 13-year veteran and captain with the Roslyn Highlands Fire Department, Haub had participated in the 1990 Avianca plane crash rescue. Proud of his German heritage, he often spoke in German to his two children and cooked up sauerbraten and goulash in the firehouse kitchen.
Daniel J. Brethel F.D.N.Y. 2001 Danny was born a fireman. This was all he ever wanted to be and he always said he was living his dream. He was very dedicated and loved his job and those he worked with. Danny was even more dedicated to his family. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his girls, Kristin and Meghan. He was so proud of their accomplishments. One of Danny’s greatest joys was taking his family out on his boat for a day of swimming and exploring. Danny lived his life to the fullest. He was the heart and soul of our family and we miss him terribly.
Stephen E. Belson F.D.N.Y. 2001 Stephen Belson graduated from Lehman College, Bronx, NY., in 1972 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He became a ‘career’ lifeguard in Rockaway , NY where he lived for 30 years. He joined the NYC Fire Department in 1973 along with many of his lifeguard friends and immediately he had found his calling. He established lifelong friendships in Rockaway and the Fire Department. Most of his 23 years in the Fire Department were at Engine 1, Ladder 24 on 31st Street and 7th Avenue. His love and dedication to that firehouse gave him the label ‘Mr. Ladder 24.’ One of his dearest friends was Father Mychal Judge and he was made an honorary Irishman by the Consulate General of Ireland. He was not married.
