Geraldine (Gerry) McKee holds a prominent place in the history of Lee’s Summit and on April 26th she added another milestone celebrating her 95th birthday.
Gerry graduated from the University of Missouri in 1938 where she had majored in biology and minored in chemistry. She began her teaching career at Barstow School in Kansas City teaching science. She later became a substitute science teacher at Lee’s Summit High School.
In 1941, Gerry married William McKee. They went on to become the parents of two sons, Mark McKee and the late John McKee. She is extremely proud of her three grandchildren, Monte McKee, Rachel McConville and Robert McKee.
Always very involved in the community, Gerry was a member of the PTA, Cub Scouts, Pi Beta Phi national sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Philanthropic Educational Organization. She served on the boards of the United Methodist Church, John Knox Village, the Kansas City Chapter of the Red Cross, and Chair of the R-7 School District Youth Services and was a charter member of the Lee’s Summit Community Hospital Auxiliary. In 1952 she organized the Lee’s Summit Republican Club.
From 1972 to 1978, her husband, William McKee served as Mayor of our community and Gerry became well known as the very gracious First Lady of Lee’s Summit.
A reception attended by family and close friends was held at the John Knox Family Great Room on April 28th. The event was coordinated by daughter in law Ann Messmer and Gerry’s good friend and Sunday School Teacher at the Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church, Fred Fuller.
Mayor Randy Rhoads presented Gerry McKee with a Proclamation in honor of her 95th birthday and in appreciation of the numerous contributions she’s made to the Lee’s Summit community during her lifetime.

So glad she had such an honored 95th birthday ... well deserved!
Gerry passed Friday morning, May 18th. She had told many people she was 'ready to go.' If a more gracious, intelligent and classy lady existed, I didn't know her. Gerry was one in a million. It makes us happy to think of her reunion with Bill, John, her Mom, countless friends who have passed before her, and Rusty.
At this time, we expect the visitation to be at 10:00 am on June 2nd, followed by a service at 11:00 at Lees Summit United Methodist Church.
