The University of Kansas Symphony Orchestra and Saxophone Quartet will kick off a tour of Kansas on Friday, Feb. 26.
The tour will take the groups to Wichita, Dodge City, Garden City, Great Bend and Salina and will include five KU Alumni Association chapter receptions, including one with Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little on Feb. 28 in Great Bend.
The tour idea came about when James Zakoura, a KU alumnus and supporter of the School of Music, attended the 2008 Collage Concert and wanted to share the music with other areas in Kansas. Zakoura worked with Dina P. Evans, career services and outreach coordinator at the School of Music, and the KU Alumni Association to coordinate the tour.
“It’s a privilege for the school to take our music outside of Murphy Hall and share it with the people of Kansas, and we are grateful for Jim’s support, as well as that of the Zakoura Family Fund and Reach Out Kansas Inc.,” said Evans.
Students represent 14 states and 9 countries including Lee’s Summit’s Allison Marie Akins, daughter of Richard and Beth Akins. Allison is a Senior who plays the French Horn and graduated from Lee’s Summit West High School.
