Chiropractic care helps infant with colic

Chiropractic care helps infant with colic

September 10, 2011

Dr. David Zak

A recent article published in The Journal of Pediatrics, Maternal and Family Health, January 2010, reports the case study of a 2-week old male patient who showed symptoms of colic, constipation and a troubled sleep pattern.
The child’s mother indicated that her son’s birth was normal and without complications. The boy began crying extensively whenever he was not eating or sleeping, and he showed signs of constipation within days after his birth, including a distended stomach and gas. The child’s doctors reduced his intake of milk, but no immediate improvement was noted. At night, the child slept intermittently.
Chiropractic care has helped alleviate the effects of many childhood ailments, including colic, this type of health care is also without the harmful side effects of many drugs.
In the case of this 2-week old, the mother wanted to try chiropractic care. When the child was presented for his initial examination, he was crying and in distress. The examining chiropractor found the existence of subluxations in the child’s spinal area. The doctor performed the first adjustment, after which the infant had an immediate bowel movement and fell asleep. A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function.
The patient underwent a regular program of chiropractic care, including spinal adjustments. After the fifth adjustment, the mother reported that the baby’s bowel movements were becoming more regular. After just 16 adjustments, the child was sleeping better and all symptoms of constipation and colic had been resolved.
This is just one case study, and more studies are needed before any absolute conclusions can be drawn.

Dr. David Zak has a chiropractic office in downtown Lees Summit at 208 S.E. 3rd Street.

I find that many of the parents that come in to see a chiropractor with a colicky baby have tried everything else and exposed their child to unpleasant tests and medications. I would love to see a time where parents would see a chiropractor first. The best way for this to happen is for chiropractors and patients to speak about how chiropractic can help, so I thank you for posting this. Chiropractic is very safe and gentle for kids and is a great place to start with trying to help a colicky baby. Chiropractic may not lead to resolution of colic in every infant, but if there is nerve system stress leading to the symptoms, chiropractic care is the best way to help an infant.

I wrote a story on Craniosacral Therapy--in my research, I found that many swore that this would help with their colicky babies. Here's the address if you want to read it:
