Female Infertility And Chiropractic Care

A recent article in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health reported on the case of a woman with an 8-year history of infertility that became pregnant shortly after starting chiropractic care.
Infertility is defined as failure to achieve a pregnancy within one year of regular unprotected intercourse. In the United States it is estimated that infertility affects 6-7.3 million women.
In this case, a 29-year-old woman went to the chiropractor with the primary complaints of lower back pain and left leg pain radiating down to her foot.
Her history also revealed that her menstrual cycles were abnormal, typically being 40-60 days on average.
The woman was not on birth control and she and her husband had unsuccessfully been trying to have a child for eight years.
Upon chiropractic examination, multiple subluxations were found and specific adjustments were provided. The results showed that after the first visit the woman’s back pain was significantly reduced and her ability to move was greatly improved.
After 4 weeks of chiropractic care, the woman reported being pregnant.
A literature review reveals 13 additional studies documenting cases of women between the ages of 22 and 37 who were infertile, and then became pregnant and had successful births after beginning chiropractic care.
The chiropractic profession continues to conduct further research in this area. Dr. David Zak has a chiropractic office in downtown Lee’s Summit at 208 S.E. 3rd Street.
