Saturday, March 2, Lee’s Summit West, Lee’s Summit North, and Lee’s Summit High School competed in the 2nd of 2 consecutive drill meets demonstrating their leadership, precision, and talent.  Despite the two snow storms that kept them from several practices, they pushed through and competed at the Lee’s Summit North drill meet on February 23 and then again at the Blue Springs South High School drill meeting on March 3.

LSHS AFJROTC did well at the LSN drill meet.  Color Guard took 2nd place, Unarmed Exhibition placed 3rd, Armed Exhibition placed 3rd, and the First Year Cadets placed 2nd.   Cadets Braidy Brook and Mason Hults placed 3rd in Dual Armed Exhibition.  In addition, a LSHS Cadet finished in the top 20 of the IDD competition at the Blue Springs South Drill Meet. LSHS will be continuing their drill season on March 9 as they travel to compete at Bellevue West High School in Bellevue, NE.

As hosts of the Lee’s Summit North Drill Meet, the Bronco AFROTC Drill Team did not compete February 23.  The LSN Cadets were outstanding hosts as schools arrived with piles of snow on the road sides.  The following week they were back in competition mode and participated in the Blue Springs South drill meet.  The Unarmed Regulation Team commanded by Zachary Sherwood took 4th place.  The First Year Cadet Team commanded by Colin Luke took 2nd place.  In the Individual Drill Down competition, Dayna Hinkle finished 19th, Zech Ford finished 4th, and Thomas Whenham finish 3rd.  In this final competition, the team finished 3rd overall, the highest finish in all 8 competitions.  The hard work of each drill team member and their dedication paid off with the drill team placing in 14 different events, making this year’s team the best team in LSN’s history.  In the drill teams future will be a March 18 performance at the at the American Legion here in Lee’s Summit to pay respects to those that have served and are serving now.

The LSW AFJROTC Drill Team had a rewarding season.  In addition to experiencing the thrill of bringing home a trophy at the end of a meet, they have enjoyed the fun of performing for the judges and audience.  At the February 23 drill meet at Lee’s Summit North, the LSW Drill Team placed 3rd overall.  With a finale of spinning 2 rifles at the same time, Cadet First Lieutenant Will Keith wowed the audience and judges and walked away with 2nd place in the Armed Exhibition category.  On Saturday, March 2 at Blue Springs South, the Unarmed Regulation Drill team, commanded by Cadet Second Lieutenant Luke Shelton took 5th place.  In the Individual Drill Down competition, LSW Cadets shined.  With over 400 Cadets at the meet and 98 making it to the finals, three LSW Cadets place in the top 10.  Cadet Technical Sergeant Jordan Kaiser came in 10th, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Nick Nathan came in 8th and Cadet Master Sergeant Gabby Belz took 1st place.  LSW Cadets are now looking forward to what next year will bring.
