Hundreds of Lee's Summit R-7 music students departed to New York City for once-in-a-lifetime performance

March 14, 2013

Close to 340 Lee's Summit R-7 School District students and chaperones departed this morning for New York City for a once-in-a-lifetime performance opportunity at the internationally known Lincoln Center.
The students are in band, choir and orchestra from Lee's Summit North High School and Lee's Summit West High School.

The LSNHS and LSWHS groups were selected to perform at 7 p.m. March 17 at Lincoln Center after completing an extensive application process through Distinguished Concerts International – New York.

Approximately 10 buses departed this morning for the Kansas City International Airport during the early morning with students and chaperones taking 10 flights to New York City.

The Lee's Summit students and chaperones plan to visit Times Square, take a harbor cruise and see a Broadway show. Students, supervised by chaperones, will also break into smaller groups and participate in activities such as visiting museums, the Met, Rockefeller Center, NBC Studios, the Empire State Building and the National September 11 Memorial.

The trip is funded by the students' families and will be returning March 18. Students also participated in a number of fundraisers to assist with the trip costs. Trip coordinators are Joe Keeney, director of orchestras at LSNHS, and Kirt Mosier, director of orchestras at LSWHS.
