I-470/I-435 Interchange Closes in 3-Trails Crossing to Fix Settling Issue
July 17, 2010 US71 S @ I-470 WB KCScout.net
Engineers at the Missouri Department of Transportation closed the westbound I-470 interchange to westbound I-435, as well as northbound Route 71 to westbound I-435 at 3 Trails Crossing at 3:30 today. The damage from a sink hole at that location has expanded, making it necessary to immediately close the roadway.
Engineers had closed the right lane of westbound I-470 to westbound I-435 on July 8 after a routine inspection revealed ground settlement beneath the highway lane in the 3-Trails Crossing interchange. Highway engineers inspected the roadway following more than two months of frequent rain. They noticed cracked concrete pavement and nearby ground settlement.
The pavement irregularity has raised enough concern that engineers decided the closing this portion of the interchange is necessary.
"Safety is our No. 1 priority and upon evaluating this section of roadway, we concluded it could quickly become a safety issue for motorists," said District Engineer Beth Wright. "We did not make the decision to close this interchange lightly, but felt it was the best course of action."
MoDOT will post detours, but motorists will need to find alternative routes. This interchange will remain closed until repairs can be made. More details regarding the repair will be released early next week.
