Jackson County Awards Construction

December 1, 2012

Jackson County has moved the renovation of the Historic Truman Courthouse forward by awarding a construction contract that will allow for completion of the project without any additional expense to county taxpayers.

At their regular weekly meeting this afternoon, the Jackson County Legislature approved a $4.8 million contract with Universal Construction Company of Lenexa, Kansas.

Once finished, the historic courthouse in Independence will be returned to the integrity of its 1933 design and offer various attractions, including tours of President Truman’s office and the courtroom where he once worked as Presiding Judge of Jackson County.

The courthouse will also feature a gallery displaying art and historical artifacts significant to the State of Missouri. Various county departments, the Independence Department of Tourism and Jackson County Historical Society will be housed in the courthouse as well.

“The Truman Courthouse is not only significant to our community, but also to the history of our nation,” said County Executive Mike Sanders. “This is a generational investment that will honor our past while ensuring this building still serves a 21st Century purpose. Most importantly, we have carefully planned for this project by saving and designating specific funds over the past two years. Because of this, we will complete this important project without asking our citizens for more tax dollars.”

Other improvements include upgraded air-conditioning, new mechanical and electrical systems and updated restroom facilities. An elevator will also be installed for easy public access to all three floors of the courthouse.

Plans call for the structure to be fully complete and open to the public beginning in summer 2013.
