Jacob Turk, candidate for U.S. House, Missouri 5th District held a news conference in downtown Lee’s Summit on Wednesday.  Turk is taking his third stab at unseating Emanuel Cleaver II in Congress.  During the news conference, Turk stated, “The political landscape of Missouri has changed.”  Turk explained that a recent poll indicates he is within “single digits” of catching up with Cleaver in the race.  He said he has been able to close the gap without a single TV or radio ad, thanks to four and a half years of hard grass roots efforts by himself, his wife and thousands of campaign workers.

Campaign contributions were significantly higher during the month of September, and the positive poll results gave his financial war chest an additional “bump,” enabling him to begin TV advertising on all four networks.

During the press conference, Turk was asked by a local television reporter about the Tea Party Report which was released the previous day by the NAACP accusing the tea party of providing a national platform for racists and extremists.  Turk said he can only speak about the tea party gatherings he has witnessed personally.  “What I’ve seen is that Americans are concerned about their government spending too much money, raising too many taxes and creating a huge burden for their grandchildren. In the Kansas City area, we have good people with good intent.”

The aggressive reporter, who seemed intent on focusing on racial issues, pushed for a comment from Turk about rumors regarding President Obama’s birth and whether or not he is a U.S. citizen. Turk reiterated that he wants to focus on the issues concerning those he wants to represent.  “I’m focusing on winning this race and governing as people want to be governed.  I’m running for Congress.  I’m not running against President Obama; I’m running against Emanuel Cleaver.”

A second reporter asked Turk about his success in meetings in the “black urban core of Kansas City”.  Turk said he said he will represent all his constituents equally and has gained a good amount of support within the urban core.  “I will continue to reach out to all parts of the district.”

Why can't the press ask questions about the issues and how the two candidates differ. What is the relevance of these questions mentioned in this article? Is it that what Emanuel Cleaver represents is big government and higher taxes to feed bigger government or is it that he's black and deserves the seat? It makes absolutely no difference what color any candidate is, it's about the policy's and what and how those policy's affect each and every person in the fifth district no matter what their race is. Quite frankly in today's day and age it's an insult to the intelligence of everyone who reads it.

All Cleaver has going for him is that he is black and that he is a democrat. the good thing is that democrats in general and black folks in particular are seeing through the lies.

Terry Hancock, we couldn't agree with you more. We tried to convey in this brief article how inappropriate those two reporters were, and that they were rudely monopolizing Mr. Turk's time. We felt Mr. Turk gave excellent answers to the inappropriate questions, and wanted to share his answers with you. The Tribune agrees with Mr. Turk - that voters wanted to hear about reducing government spending, taxes and the burden that's being passed to future generations, rather than race.
Thank you for reading and commenting.
