Lee’s Summit Police Department officers will join servers at Habenero’s Restaurant located at 1008 SE Blue Parkway in Lee’s Summit for the sixth annual Tip-a-Cop event on Sunday, April 2 to raise funds for Special Olympics Missouri.
Last year’s event raised a total of $6,000 for the group that provides opportunities for special needs athletes to experience joy and success and build new abilities and confidence through sports. All of the money raised at the event serves the estimated 15,000 Special Olympics athletes in Missouri. This year, according to an LSPD spokesperson, the group aims to raise $8,000.
Officers ask patrons to first tip the servers at the restaurant, but will accept donations during the day-long event.
The first crew of officers will arrive at Habenero’s when the restaurant opens at 11 a.m. and the last will leave after the doors close at 9 p.m. Lee’s Summit is a very generous and caring community, according to the department spokesperson, and the response to the event has always been very good.
Unlike years past, Tip-a-Cop will take place on a Sunday, and promises to be an event the entire family will enjoy.
The Minions will appear from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., followed by a group of Star Wars characters from 2:30 until 4:30. Patrons are encouraged to take photos with the characters at no charge, though donations will be cheerfully accepted.
An X-Wing Fighter, which was used by the US Air Force Drum and Bugle Corps during the home football games, will also be on display. Be sure to watch the Tip-a-Cop Facebook event page for more announcements and surprises.
Raffle tickets will be sold at the cost of $5 each, or three tickets for $10, for the chance to win a 43-inch Sharp Smart TV. Event t-shirts will also be available for purchase.
The LSPD is partnering with Habernero's to award any customer who braves the restaurant’s “747 Challenge” by consuming a five-pound burrito in the space of 45 minutes with a t-shirt and a $25 donation to Special Olympics in their name. The names of successful challengers will also have their names placed on the wall on the restaurant honoring other winners.
