A fire caused significant damage to a home on Lake Lotawana’s east side late Sunday night.
Lotawana Fire Protection District, along with automatic aid from Prairie Township Fire Protection District, was dispatched at 9:26 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2017 to a reported residential structure fire at 49 X Street.
While on patrol in the area, Lake Lotawana Police Sgt. Brett Thompson noticed the flames coming from the rear of the house. He requested fire department response, and sprang into action, attempting to determine if anyone was in the house.
He received a report from a neighbor that no one was home, but after hearing barking coming from inside the back door, he forced entry and bravely rescued the family dog.
Lotawana Fire was first on the scene, finding fire coming from the back and roof gable vent of the single-story residence. Along with the assistance from Prairie Township, Lone Jack, and Central Jackson County, the blaze was extinguished. While the damage was extensive, it was limited to two bedrooms and their associated roof/attic space. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
Appreciation is extended to the hard work of all crews involved, and special recognition given to the quick, selfless action of LLPD Sgt. Thompson.
